DSBN Students Learn Life Lessons at Holocaust Symposium
Students at the District School Board of Niagara will be examining the past and looking to the future at the fourth annual Holocaust Symposium and Anti-Discrimination Day being held at Welland Centennial Secondary School. More than 360 students from 12 different schools across the DSBN are expected to take part in the symposium on Wednesday, November 4.
“During the symposium, students will have the opportunity to learn about the holocaust from actual survivors,” says Rachel Gracey, Teacher, Quaker Road Public School. “Their stories and life experiences will be very inspiring for students to hear. Their stories will also be powerful reminders of the importance of fostering open and inclusive attitudes and communities.”
Throughout the course of the day, students will rotate through ten different workshops. They will hear from survivors and storytellers, while learning more about how they can help promote a positive atmosphere in their schools and communities.
The symposium will feature two keynote addresses. In the morning session, authors Susy Goldstein and Wendy Share will speak to students about their book “10 Marks and a Train Ticket”, which chronicles their father’s life from his childhood in Germany to his escape from the Nazis as one of the children of the Kindertransport.
Eli Rubenstein, the National Director of March of the Living will deliver the afternoon address. The National March of the Living is an annual educational program that gathers thousands of Jewish youth from around the world in Poland and Israel to mark two of the most significant dates in the modern Jewish calendar.
