Code of Conduct

CONSEQUENCES are actions students know will occur should they choose to break the Code of Conduct. Consequences are natural outcomes of inappropriate behaviour. The number of times a student breaks a rule in a reasonable time frame, may determine the consequence the student will receive. Each child has a new start every day for in-class consequences. However, if staff observe an overall pattern developing, communication with parents will occur. This progressive discipline serves as a guide and may not always apply for both in-class and out-of-class consequences. Certain bullying behaviours, such as physical or verbal aggression, could escalate the disciplinary response. Decisions will then be made at the discretion of the administration and staff.

PLEASE NOTE: IF STAFF OBSERVE A PATTERN OF MISBEHAVIOUR DEVELOPING, COMMUNICATION WITH PARENTS WILL OCCUR.

Primary "In-Class" Consequences

(when a student breaks a rule in class)

Reminder or Warning (student and teacher talk and review rule);
Time out or practice the rule or detention;
Detention and parent contact;
Principal, student and teacher conference to develop individualized; behaviour contract, shared with the parent;
Principal contacts parent, possible suspension.

Junior/Intermediate "In-Class" Consequences

(when a student breaks a rule in class)

Reminder or Warning (student and teacher talk and review the rule);
Detention with behavioural reflection or counselling to develop an individualized behaviour contract and/or parent contact;
Detention and parent contact;
Principal, student and teacher conference to review an individualized behaviour plan, shared with the parent;
Principal contacts parent, possible suspension.

Primary/Junior/Intermediate "Out-of-Class" Consequences

(when a student is observed by a staff member breaking the Code of Conduct in the school or on the playground)

Warning (staff member and student conference together and review the School Code of Conduct);
Discussion with principal and/or office detention and/or behaviour report and/or call home;
Discussion with principal and/or office detention and/or exclusion from specific activities or behaviour report and/or call home;
Principal, parent, student and teacher conference to develop an individualized behaviour contract which may require restitution or result in withdrawal from activities;
Principal contacts parent, possible suspension.
