Message from the Principal

Welcome to Applewood Public School!

We are the home of the Applewood Alligators and our banners at our entrance boast “the best school in DSBN! Respect and Responsibility!” As we open September 2009, we begin our 31st year of education excellence. We have a great team of professionals who work hard daily to provide a high quality of teaching skills to develop and enhance student learning. We are very committed to student success and believe in a home and school partnership. We have great community support: encompassing our custodians, secretary and support staff; parents; School Council; community agencies and volunteers.

Set in the heart of Merritton, in the city of St. Catharines, our school first opened in 1979 as a leader in energy conservation. Although the solar panels were eventually removed due to structural complications, we continue to be awarded for conscientiously reducing our energy consumption. The structure of the school had open-concept classrooms: 4 pods downstairs, a double Kindergarten classroom and 2 pods upstairs with joining computer lab and library. Built in a valley of berms, 2 creative playgrounds were financed and installed; and are maintained by our Applewood School Council, to this day.

Summer 2009, has been a busy one with a variety of contractors working endless hours to improve our electrical supply to all classrooms; installing and painting permanent walls in all instructional areas; building shelving and counter-tops; hanging new tack boards and white boards bringing us into the 21st century as an educational, ECO focused and technological facility. The northwest berm has been lowered to ensure a safer exit to the school grounds for students on the second level in case of any emergency. All these are great improvements that I know we will embrace quickly and enjoy. Our joy is our students!

If you are returning to our school, or a new family to our community, we welcome you! We look forward to another wonderful year of teaching; learning; intra-school sports; colour teams; supporting others, gaining acclamations and awards near and far; and celebrating our accomplishments; all captured in our outstanding yearbook publication.

Applewood Public School is a small but industrious place to learn and be!

I wish you well for this school year 2009-2010!
