Track and Field

The 2009 track and field season came to a close this weekend with "Quick" Nick Katulic-Ducharme and Marty "The Machine" Richardson competing at the OFSAA championships in Toronto. Though both boys competed well. they were unable to crack into the top eight against the best competition in the province. Mr. Lavictoire would like to congratulate and thank all athletes that competed this year and would like to pass on a huge thank you to assistant coaches Mrs. Miller and Mr. Peebles. Let's make 2010 the best year ever!

Rowing Team

Your Cougar rowing team competed in the Canadian Secondary School Rowing Association Championship, a regatta with crews from all across North America. The Jr. Mens 4, Jr. Womens 4, and the Sr. Womens 8 all rowed very hard but were unable to make it out of the heats in this very competitive regatta. Anna Ionson rowed to a fourth place finish in the sr. Womens lightweight single and a gold in the Jr. Womens single, which has not been done by a Centennial athlete in recent memory. Congratulations to all rowers this year on a great season!

Reach Team

Congratulations to our Intermediate Reach team members who totally rocked at their Tournament May 21s at Governor Simcoe. Our Cougars finished their season undefeated! Way to go!

Girls Soccer

May 20th, the girls travelled to Ridgway to play in the Zone semi-finals. The girls played an outstanding game defeating Ridgeway 4-0. Goals were scored by Katrina Arnds, Shelby Johnston, and a penalty shot by Rachel Chouinard. The girls play in the Zone final May 22nd at St. Mikes at 4:30.

Girls Baseball

The girls baseball team participated in the DSBN slo-pitch tournament May 19th in St. Catharines. The team played with their hearts against some tough competition from Lakeshore, A.N. Meyer and Holy Cross. The team was lead by offence and defensive play of shortstop Michelle Young, the pitching of Becky Dixon and fielding of Stephanie Cyr. Ms. Spiers, Mr. Snopek, and Mr. Sarvis are proud of all your efforts and making this an enjoyable season. Just a reminder that some players still need to pay for their T-shirts to Mr. Snopek.

Boys Soccer Team

May 19th, the boys soccer team played a great game. Travis Fulop scored twice for the cougars but it wasn't enough as their season ended with a loss to Ridgway Crystal Beach. Mr. Matola would like to thank all the players for a great season. He looks forward to next year with this young and improving team.

Rowing team

Centennials rowing team competed in there second regatta of the season in our backyard at the South Niagara Rowing Club. The Junior Mens 4, Junior Womens 4 and the Senior Womens 8 all finished 5th in there heats. A big congratulations goes out to Anna Ionson who finished 6th at the Stotesbury cup regatta down in Philadelphia. She then came back to Welland and finished 1st in both the junior and senior womens single. Great work Anna and the rest of the rowing team.

Cheerleading!

Congratulations! to the cheerleading team who places 3rd  at Nationals! Awesome job ladies!

Track Team

Zone Results:

The Zone 2-3 track and field championships were held Tuesday, May 11 at Ridgeway, and what a spectacular day it was for your Cougars.  Amid fierce competition, they competed brilliantly, earning 25 medals en route to a solid fourth overall in the team rankings – and more importantly, beating bigger school like Lakeshore, Myer, and yes, Notre Dame.

The day was a scintillating one for the hurdlers, as they all took home much hardware, with several earning double medals.  Marty “The Machine” Richardson earned two silvers which was matched by Jen “Catwalk” Weir.  “Quick” Nick KD had a silver as well as a gold while also setting a Zone record, while Karley “Lil Lightning” Gatta finally lived up to her huge potential by winning gold in the sprint hurdles and another bronze.  Katey “Big KG” Gatta carried the family torch, earning two silvers in the steeplechase and the 3K.  “Flyin” Ryan Albanese led the distance runners, winning gold in the 15 and silver in the 8, while Chelsey “Small Mac” McFarland placed first in the 3K and Tessa Tritton added a bronze in the 15 to her gold in the 3K.

In all, 27 athletes qualified for SOSSA which will take place next Thursday.

WAYS TO STAY GREEN!

Canadians are among the heaviest users of energy in the world, on a per capita basis. By the age of six months, each Canadian has consumed as many resources as the average person in a developing country has in his or her lifetime. You don’t have to be in the environmental club to do your part for the environment. The environmental club has found out ways to do everyday tasks and still save our planet. These simple tasks can be done at school, when shopping, and at home. These things include:

-Turning off equipment when not in use (including taps and electronics).
-Recycle paper, plastic, glass, and waste. When you recycle one aluminum can it saves enough energy to operate a TV for 3 hours.
-Using refillable water bottles instead of plastic (it is safer and cheaper).
-Using containers instead of plastic bags for lunches.
-Buying energy efficient products.
-Use recycled paper. Every ton of recycled office paper saves 380 gallons of oil.
