Track and Field

Track and Field Team 2008

The big announcement for the 2008 track and field team was the welcoming of Niagara Athletics coach Paul Peebles to the staff.  Paul will be working primarily with the high jumpers and throwers.  He brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the fold, and we are looking to take full advantage of his boundless energy to make this the best team in years.  Rookie coach
Mr. Dettman will be stepping to the bat to take care of the middle distance runners, and what he lacks in experience he makes up for in dedication and enthusiasm.

The team met for the first time on Wednesday February 27th, and this year’s group looks to be the strongest in years.  With OFSAA veterans Blake Miller, Carly Davies, junior female MVP Michelle Hollingshead, Olenka Iwanicki, and Shelby Johnston all returning to the group, the team has much experience to call upon.  Last year’s senior male MVP Cody Wilson is coming back to lead the middle distance runners, and junior standout Spencer Giles will also bring some much needed leadership to the group.  Junior male MVP Mike Boyd worked hard this off-season to improve his power, while speedster Ashley Fulop will be looking for redemption this year after falling ill just as last year’s meets heated up.  The throwers will be led by Miller and Stephanie Cyr, who looks to improve on last year’s SOSSA berth with a trip to OFSAA.  A strong group of grade 9’s rounds out the team, including Jonathan Lue and Marty Richardson for the boys, Anna Ionson and Melissa Borowski for the girls, assuring the team will maintain depth in the coming years.

The goal for the team is to place in the top three at the Zone Championships, have 30 athletes qualify for SOSSA, and double last year’s OFSAA participants to 10.  With the outstanding talent and dedicated coaching staff, we have no doubt we will achieve all that we have set out to do.  Go Cougars!

2008 Statistics

In track and field action, at one of the largest invitational high school track meets in Ontario, our Cougars performed brilliantly. The team earned 15 medals in all - not bad for a small school from Welland that was competing against track powerhouses from Brampton and Missisauga.

The day started off great in the field, as "Dynamite" Dylan Niece crushed the field in the javelin, earning GOLD and making a statement that he is definitely "THE MAN" to beat in his event. Dakota LaMarre, another athlete from the outstanding group of grade 9's, heaved the discus to earn another GOLD medal for the Cougars. Later in the day,
Amanda "Limewire" Weaver jumped a massive personal best in the high jump to take home the gold. The girls relay team of Carly, Shelby, Olenka and Michelle served notice that they remain a force to be reckoned with by taking first while matched up against some of the toughest competition in the province. The meet MVP was reserved for another grade 9 - Vinh "Thunder" Le polished off his GOLD medal performance in the triple jump with a BRONZE in the long jump, while anchoring the boys relay team to another bronze

What a great time to be a part of the Centennial Track & Field team! At the Ridgeway invitational meet, your Cougars performed very well and once again earned the respect of the much larger teams.

Gold medals were earned by Olenka Iwanicki in the long jump and "Flyin" Ryan Albanese n the 1500 meter run. Strong performances were also turned in by
Marty "The Machine" Richardson in the hurdles, "Dynamite" Dylan Niece in the javelin,
Shelby "Sunshine" Johnston in the triple jump, and Carly Davies in the discus, who all earned 2nd place in their events. Bronze medals were brought home by the Sr. Boys relay team, Blake "The Athlete" Miller,
Vinh "Thunder" Lee, and the Jr. boys four by four relay squad.

Another beautiful day in the sun  another spectacular outing for the Centennial track and field team. At the zone 2-3 Invitational, your Cougars competed brilliantly and brought home their greatest haul of medals yet this year.

Leading the charge was Pat "Big Cat" Dignard who earned 3rd in sprint hurdles, 1st in the long hurdles, and drove the senior boys relay team of Mike, Olivier, and Kacey to another 1st place finish. "The Pocket Rocket" Melissa Borowski ran an outstanding race in the 100, grabbing the GOLD to go alone with her 3rd place in the 200. Other gold medalists were Carly Davies in the discus, Shelby Johnston in the triple jump, Marty Richardson in the hurdles and Dylan Niece in the javelin. Amazing performances by Amanda Weaver in the high jump, Ashley Fulop in the discus, Olivier Lempereur in the 200, Vinh Le in the triple jump and hurdles, and Megan Matkowski in the 800 inspired their Cougar teammates to give just a little more!

Yes Cougar Nation, it is once again time for a thrilling track announcement - but first, take a look around your class. You may very well be in the presence of SOSSA champions! At the SOSSA track meet, Centennial athletes brought home  2 gold medals, which guided the team to a solid top ten finish.

The first to bring home the gold was Dakota "Da Man" LaMarre, who stunned his competitors as he was victorious in the discus. The other was the relay team of Carly Davies, Shelby Johnston, Olenka Iwanicki, and Michelle Hollingshead, as they continued their march towards OFSAA with another GOLD medal to add to their impressive collection.
