SOSSA Bound!
On April 5th, Governor Simcoe Secondary School hosted this year's senior sub-zone badminton competition. It took place all day and included many of Simcoe's athletes. All categories including male and female singles, double, and mixed doubles were full. This year Governor Simcoe had many strong players that have improved greatly and all competitors hoped to advance and move on to regionals. Females doubles Laura Scull and Amanda Pepin, males doubles Ben Robinson and Jason Whittaker, female singles Miranda Smoor, and males single Andrew Ferguson were among those who moved on.
On April 11th, all the badminton players made their way up to Smithville District Christian Secondary School where the competition continued. At the end of the day, males singles player Andrew Ferguson and females singles player Miranda Smoor each placed second and will now move on to SOSSA which takes place on April 20th in Waterdown.
As a grade nine student, playing badminton was not a very popular or cool sport to be involved in. Two years later as the time has passed, the gym is packed with students practising. Tryouts this year were crowded and many cuts had to be made, as there are only so many spots.
Badminton is a sport that has been growing in popularity and can be a lot of fun to watch.
In a few weeks, the grade nine and tens will start their badminton tournaments in the hopes of doing well themselves.
