The Governor Simcoe Redcoats Senior Girls Volleyball Team had an incredible season with an impressive overall record of 40-8. The Lady Redcoats qualified for AA OFSAA provincial championships March 5-7th in Kingston at the Royal Military College.
Highlights of the season include a second place finish at the Eden High school tournament and another silver medal at the Brock Invitational Volleyball Tournament where Ally Fast [captain] and Laura Scull were selected as tournament all-stars. Other members of the team include: Amanda Pepin, Samantha de Jong, Erica Bush, Kaylee Barber, Holly Linklater, Courtney Pay, Katie Wilson, Hannah Kirby, Miranda Smoor, Rachel Stopard, and Victoria McDougall. Coaches included the OFSAA Girls Basketball coach, Jill Stiefelmeyer, Dana Loucks, and Josh Patterson.
The girls captured their third straight senior SOSSA Championship held at Governor Simcoe. The team easily defeated Welland Centennial in the finals for the title. The team was ranked sixth going into the Provincial Championship. The team faired well last year, losing only two games to the eventual gold and silver medallists.
The team had a more pleasant fate at OFSAA this year. The girls finished with a 3-1 record in pool play. They advanced to the quarter finals and had a huge defeat against Central Hastings. This win led the team to the semi finals, which meant the girls would have to play the defending champions, General Amherst. The Lady Redcoats defeated General Amherst in their most challenging game yet. The win meant Governor Simcoe made the OFSAA Championship finals. The game was exciting and passion filled. Governor Simcoe defeated Penetanguishene for the gold.
No team from SOSSA has ever won a AA OFSAA Championship. In 1986 the three "A" classifications were developed and implemented. Never has a SOSSA team brought home an OFSAA Gold.
Coach Stiefelmeyer sums up the incredible season with these few words, "We are very excited for this win and very proud of these young ladies. This is a fantastic way for the girls to end the season."
This year's Junior Girls Volleyball Team had an amazing season. We started off back in November with try-outs. We had many girls come out for the team and we narrowed it down to six returning players and six grade nines. Our rookies came from a variety of elementary schools but we clicked really well, their first task was to learn the new, more specialized 5-1 system. The transition was difficult but the girls managed to conquer it. Our rookies were Chelsea Rutherford, Sonja Vukovic, Natalie Diakow, Rebecca Bruno, Stephanie Vickers and Kandice Remple.
One of the most difficult decisions made this season was trying to come up with a setter. We had so many natural hitters on the team and no one that was a skilled setter. After careful consideration it was decided that Jessica Kilkenny would be the best choice. Jessica is a smart, versatile player that reluctantly agreed to the position for the best sake of the team. The starting powers were Nicole Carmichael and Sydney Boyes (captain). Starting in the middle was Justyna Bleich and Stepahnie Vickers. Rounding out the team was Sarah Mallory on the right side and Katey Andrade as an awesome libero.
Early in the season we played in the Thorold Tournament and made it to the semi-finals. Next we played in the Eden Tournament and made it to the finals and lost to Eden. Finally near the end of our season we hosted a tournament at Governor Simcoe and we beat Eden in the championship game. Our team had improved so much over the season. We were ready and excited about the play-offs.
We started off well in the play-offs but were stopped by the powerful Eden team in the semi-finals. We had a great season, the team worked and played hard and that was evident in how much they improved over the course of the season. Great job ladies you should all be very proud of yourself.
A big thank-you to our assistant coach Russell Porta, a grade ten player on the Senior Boys team and a member of the Rapids. Your dedication to the team was appreciated.
