Code of Conduct

Attendance Policies

If a student comes into class after the attendance scantron has been sent to the office, that student must get an admit slip and then go directly to class.

Sign in/Sign out Procedures

Students may sign out at the Attendance Office during the school day only if the request is accompanied by a phone call or a note from a parent/guardian. If a student has attained the age of 18, the “Age of Majority” form must be completed and submitted to the office. Assuming full responsibility for his or her education, the student can then sign in or out providing the attendance secretary with an appropriate reason.

Ill During School Hours

Students who take ill during school hours will report directly to the Main Office after obtaining permission from the teacher to leave class. Office personnel will contact the student’s parents/guardians for release confirmation.

Students must make arrangements to complete missed assignments and tests.

Persistent unverified lates and/or absences will result in the following interventions: teacher-student conferencing, detention(s),extra assignment(s), telephone call(s) home, suspension.

Classroom Policies

Dress Code

The following is a list of unacceptable dress practices that do not meet the standard of dress required while at school or in the workplace community:

  • hats, coats (except some tech classes)
  • hoods, bandanas, sweatbands, sunglasses, and other headgear
  • clothing with images of profanity, violence, suggestive language, alcohol, drugs, gangs, etc. (offensive in nature)
  • shorter than mid-thigh lengths skirts, shorts and dresses
  • “beach-wear”, midriffs, spaghetti straps, muscle shirts, low-cut tops.
  • accessories or clothing which may be considered dangerous or unsafe

School members who are improperly dressed will be asked to change or will be sent home until acceptable clothing is worn.

Food/Drinks

All food and drinks, with the exception of water, is not permitted in the classrooms.

Students are not permitted to purchase food or drink from the vending machines during class hours.

Cell Phones

Cell phones are to be off and out of sight while in the school.

Personal Listening Devices

Personal listening devices may only be used in the classroom if this is listed as an educational accommodation for the student.

Hallways

Class Time: Students are not permitted in the hallways during class time unless they have a hall pass.

Lunch Time: Students are not permitted on the second floor, within stairwells, in classrooms, or on/near private property.

Lockers

All students will be assigned a locker. Students will be expected to keep their lockers in good clean condition.
Students are not to share their locker or lock combination with anyone.

Any student who abuses a locker will be required to clean and/or repair the locker.

Safe Schools Policies

Smoking

The Provincial Tobacco Control Act prohibits anyone from smoking anywhere on school property.

If you are caught smoking on school property your name will be reported to the Public Health Department which will result in a $ fine.

Alcohol and Drugs

All members of the school community are expected to come to school or work free from the influence of alcohol and illegally obtained drugs.
It is illegal and forbidden to use, possess or sell drugs or alcohol on school property at any time, or at any school-related event.

Gambling

All forms of gambling and gambling paraphernalia (ie. dice/poker chips)are not permitted at any time during the school day on or around the Kernahan Park community.

Weapons

No school member is to ...

  • be in possession of a weapon(s), weapon replicas or fire crackers;
  • use any object to injure, threaten or intimidate another person

Physical Violence

NO physical aggression (ie. hitting, punching, tripping, slapping, spitting) is permitted on school property or in the vicinity of the school community.

Any student who engages in alcohol or drug use, gambling, possession or use of a weapon or in physical violence will have their parents contacted, a report filed with the local police and will be required to make restitution to the victim and/or school community.

Counseling and/or mediation services are available at the school and may be required before return to school is permitted.

Bullying

Bullying is a conscious, willful and deliberate hostile activity that is done repeatedly and over time, and is intended to harm. Bullying can include verbal, physical, cyber, sexual and emotional harassment.

If a school member finds, themselves in this situation or, is a silent bystander, they should do the following:

  1. report the incident immediately to...
    administration, guidance, special ed., a teacher or youth counsellor
  2. seek out peer mediation

Our school community must be a safe and peaceful place for all its members to teach, learn and work.

Any student who violates our safe school policies will have their parents contacted and will be sent home.

Police involvement and school consequences will result where applicable.

Counseling services are available at the school.
