See Mr. Bell if you are interested in playing The Chess club is a place where new and hardened players get together to enjoy the game of chess. The club is very informal, with members attending when they want. Competition ranges from high-level games between those who have gone to the board wide tournaments to friendly games against novice players. Doubles chess, a strange but entertaining team variant is very common. Their motto, "Accept the Challenge". See Mr. Bell if you are interested!
THE LATEST RESULTS: ON February 16, 2007, 40 elementary and high school competitors from Port Colborne Public Schools competed in the third annual 789 Chess Tournament. Hosted by PCHS, each schools team members played in the Swiss Format which pitted stronger and stronger players against each other. Mr. Bell, the head of Geography at Port High said� The Swiss format allows top players to emerge and challenge their skills with really tough competition. After a fun but gruelling all-day tournament, three winners and an overall champion were declared. - The Grade 8 champion was Chris Madronich of Steel Street PS.
- The grade 9 1st place winner was Wylie Birkmyre of PCHS.
- The grade 7 top prize and also the Overall Tournament Championship was claimed by Zachary Kennedy of Steele Street Public School.
- For their efforts, students won Trophies, Chess sets and there were lots of lucky draw prizes for all the competitors. Prizes were also awarded for 2nd and 3rd place in each grade.
The competitive spirit appears to be alive and well in our public schools. Kevin Guenette of Port High said, This was an awesome tournament. It will be even better next year when these competitive grade 8's get to Port High. Kevin also mentioned that he was looking forward to competing in the upcoming DSBN regional tournament in April.

Top honours, the trophy and the First Place cash prize went to Kevin Guenette. Kevin defeated some excellent players and showed solid determination in the final sprinted matches. Congratulations Kevin. Port High's chess team was off to a great start this year. Kevin Guenette placed second in the senior division in the first DSBN tournament for the 2006-2007 year hosted here at PCHS. Over 90 competitors vied for top honours. The other members of the team finished with excellent results. It was the first time PCHS has hosted a DSBN board wide event in many years. Thanks to Mr. Bell and the chess team for hosting what is sure to be an annual event. The second tournament ( Nov 17 at EL Crossley) saw over 110 participants fighting for top prizes. This time, Eli Dwor placed second in the Intermediate Division. All the other team members showed excellent play and many improved their Chess Canada Rankings. Congratulations Team! Future tournaments are scheduled for December, February and March leading up to the DSBN and Provincial Championships.
