Poetry Patio

Poems play an important part of our Shared Reading each week in Grade 1.

Poetry time is an opportunity for our classes to read together at the carpet. It may take the form of echo reading (students repeating the teacher) or choral reading (students all reading together). It is also a great opportunity to work on phonemic skills such as rhyming words, syllables, beginning and ending sounds, segmenting words into individual sounds and word families. The boys and girls also have a fun time challenging themselves to locate words in the poem that are also on our class word wall.

Each student is given a copy of the poem to colour and put into their poetry duo-tangs. These poetry books are sent home periodically to share with their families! A copy of each poem is also put in a basket at the reading corner for the students to reread during self-selected reading time!
