Jolly Phonics letters and sounds will be introduced at a rate of two or three a week. Please review the letters and sounds with your child as often as possible. Remember, teaching your child to say and write the letters of the alphabet is not enough. Before your child can learn to read and write, s/he needs to understand the connection between sounds and letters. The following activities are helpful in aiding your child to associate sounds to letters.
- Have your child finger-trace in his/her booklet and then on multi-sensory surfaces such as cloth or in sand or salt. Ask him/her to say the corresponding sound/action as each letter is written.
- Construct letters using various materials such as macaroni, play dough or pipe cleaners. Again, have your child say the corresponding sounds as s/he feels and names each letter.
- Place magnetic letters on the refrigerator for your child to practice letter names and sounds, form words and/or create simple messages.
- Have your child find objects in your house that correspond with the letters/sounds in the booklet (e.g. /s/ salt, /a/ apple).
