Advertising Project


The purpose of this project is to demonstrate what you have learned throughout the semester. Your final project is to come up with a product and create a video commercial (30 seconds - 1 minute long) and print ad for it. 

Part 1:  Video Commercial--Group Component of Project

  1. Each person will prepare and submit individual brainstorming notes with ideas for you video commercial.  Include 3 or more slogan ideas.
     

  2. You will be placed in a group of 3 to work on the video commercial.
     

  3. Each person will keep their own Productivity Log of progress.
     

  4. Create a storyboard, script and a prop list.  Everyone in the group must know what to bring for the video shoot.
     

  5. Each member of the group is to be involved in each step.
     

  6. Post-production editing will be done on the computer.

  7. Synopsis.  Short 1-2 paragraph description of your commercial and why our company should choose yours over all others.

Part 2:  Print Ad

Each person is to work on the following alone!!

Your final product (done alone)  will be a full page Print Ad (8.5" x 11") and will include:

  1. Continue to complete your Productivity Log each day.
  2. Slogan Ideas -- List 5 or more slogan ideas (YOUR ideas) then mark the one you will use in your print ad.
  3. Read this article  Creating an Effective Print Ad
  4. Find sample Print Ads that are effective.  Use ideas from them when creating your sketches.
  5. Contact Sheet
  6. Preliminary Sketches
    1. Draw 4 full-page rough sketches of  your Print Ad.  Remember to use sample Ads you've found to help you prepare a professional-looking ad.  One sketch is to show an Ogilvy Layout, one is to show a Z Layout (lightly draw the Z then place object).  Pick 2 more layouts from the Creating an Effective Print Ad article. 
    2. Mark the preliminary sketch you like best.
  7. Variation Sketches
    1. Draw 4 Variations on the chosen preliminary sketch.
    2. Pick your final sketch.  It needs to be in colour.
  8. Final Product
    1. Use Photoshop Elements to prepare your Print Ad. 
    2. Set the size to 8.5" x 11" before starting. 
    3. Don't put any important parts close than .25" from the edge of the page or it'll be cut off.
    4. When done print a colour copy of your Print Ad (in Room 214)
    5. Drag your photoshop file to the handin drive, in your ComTech folder.
  9. Design Report -- Type 1-2 paragraphs indicating which layout style you chose for your final Print Ad and why.  What makes your Print Ad effective, why should I choose yours for my company?
