Dear Parent/Guardian:

Your son/daughter is about to embark upon a Grade 10 half-course in Career Studies. This course will begin on Tuesday, September 2nd and finish on Thursday, November 6th. As your son/daughter's Career Studies teacher, I would like to keep you apprised of the unique aspects of this course.

Unlike other classes, Career Studies has an innovative form of final evaluation. The Final Summative Assessment for the Career Studies course will consist of a multi-faceted project worth 30% of your son/daughter's final grade.   Although the Final Summative Assessment is not a formal written examination in the traditional sense, it is nevertheless governed by the same rules and regulations; it is considered mandatory and it is of equal importance.  Dates arranged for the presentation of the Final Summative Assessment will be firm and the student must follow exam rules and regulations if he/she must miss the assessment date.  Not complying may result in a mark of zero.

To complete the Final Summative Assessment, each student will be required to present information on a chosen career area or occupation. Throughout the course, students will work on activities that will assist them in compiling the necessary information for this task.  Through this comprehensive package of tasks, each student will demonstrate that they have achieved the Career Studies course learning expectations.  In addition, they will have developed personally relevant, usable information.

Students will purchase an SWC Record of Achievement folder ($ 15.00). The Record of Achievement folder is used to house and organize information for their Career Studies Portfolio Project.  By semester end, the Portfolio is meant to develop into a collection of letters of reference, certificates, written pieces, photographs, assignments, and personal artifacts that will illustrate each student's employability.

Please sign this letter to indicate you have read and understand the unique aspects of this course.
