Election ModeCivics

As the twenty-first century unfolds, Canada is undergoing significant change. Canadians are struggling with a range of challenging questions, such as the following: As our population becomes more diverse, how do we ensure that all voices are heard? How do we resolve important societal and community issues in the face of so many diverse and divergent views influenced by differing values? What role will Canada play within an increasingly interconnected global community?

This course explores what it means to be an informed, participating citizen in a democratic society.

EXPECTATIONS FROM STUDENTS
• Students will be encouraged actively to participate in debates, simulations, role playing, and class
discussions.
• Students are expected to apply interpersonal and academic skills as well as demonstrate knowledge
learned.
• Students are expected to put forth at all times a sincere effort and maintain complete and organized
notes.
• Regular attendance and punctuality are essential to ensure success in the course. If a student

scheduled day.
• If a student misses a testing date and cannot write the test in advance, the student will write it the
first day back or at a time arranged between the student and the teacher (lunch, after school etc.)
**** Students are responsible for their own learning. In cases of absence, students are
responsible for finding out what work has been missed. They must complete all assigned
tasks for success.

Units:

Informed Citizenship

Purposeful Citizenship

Active Citizenship

What:          Civics is an open and mandatory half credit grade 10 course of study.

Why:           Do you know your rights and freedoms living in Canada?  What does it mean to be Canadian?  How are we different than other countries?  What does citizenship involve?  God has blessed us by allowing us to live in this amazing country and therefore, we have a responsibility to be “informed”, “active”, and “purposeful”.  Throughout this course we will analyze these three responsibilities over four units:
