Science
Welcome to the Science Department at Stamford Collegiate! Now is an exciting time to study science. It seems every day, the news contains the story of a remarkable scientific discovery or device which will enhance our lives. Whether it be the human genome project and genetic research or recent missions on Mars, Saturn and Titan, amazing triumphs are happening in science.
Here at Stamford we are committed to sharing with our students some of these wonderful things. Hopefully, we will awaken in them the joy of scientific investigation and discovery, while also giving them the background and skills they need for the 21st century. Who knows, some may even follow in the footsteps of some of former students and go on to great scientific achievement, like Dr. Giauque, a Nobel laureate and Stamford graduate.
Whether you are interested in science as a career choice, or are just taking it to satisfy your graduation requirements, we are committed to providing you with the opportunity to excel to the best of your abilities, through hands-on activities, engaging classroom discussions and opportunities to examine science outside of the school setting. Hopefully, in the end you will agree with the famous physicist Richard Feynman that there is “a wonderful pleasure in finding things out”.

Science Department Philosophy
It seems that every day, the newspapers are reporting a new scientific discovery, most recently in the world of medicine and space exploration. In the last 50 or even just 20 years, science has led to the creation of new technologies, which have yet to be fully realized. It is clear that science has an impact on our lives, and it is growing.
Here in the science department, we encourage students to explore and understand the world around them. This is accomplished through laboratory experiments, research assignments, presentations and lectures. Hopefully students will gain an appreciation for the role of science in their everyday lives and will continue to observe, examine, and seek answers to their questions, long after they finish high school.
