COOPERATIVE EDUCATION - “EXPERIENCE IT!”
WHAT IS COOPERATIVE EDUCATION?
  • Coop is a joint effort between the school and the community to provide students with an opportunity to combine in-school studies with on-the-job experiences
  • Coop allows students the chance to preview a career in order to make informed post secondary decisions
  • Coop students work everyday at their subject related placement for morning or afternoon blocks for one full semester while continuing their courses at school
  • Two credits are granted for the successful completion of the Coop program
  • In partnership with the Coop student, the teacher and the employer, a Personalized Placement Learning Plan is developed and updated for each student
BENEFITS OF COOPERATIVE EDUCATION
  • Learn how to prepare a cover letter, a resume and participate in job interviews
  • Expand on the skills studied in class using up to date equipment and methods
  • Receive on-the-job safety training in a related subject area
  • Develop employability skills and become aware of the demands of employment
  • Begin an apprenticeship in a skilled trade
  • Develop good references and make contacts for part-time or full-time employment
WHO CAN APPLY AND HOW?
  • All senior students planning on employment, apprenticeship, college or university
  • Select Cooperative education on your option sheet in February and complete the Cooperative Education Application form
  • After approval by the school’s Cooperative Education committee, a successful job interview and the pre-employment session, the student will start the placement
SPECIALIZED COOPERATIVE EDUCATION OPPORTUNITIES
  • MILITIA COOP: earn four credits by training with the Canadian Forces Reserve
  • ONTARIO YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM (OYAP): enables students who are 16 years of age or older to begin their apprenticeship and meet diploma requirements
  • MODIFIED ONTARIO YOUTH APPRENTICESHIP PROGRAM (MOYAP): enables students who have completed 27 credits including compulsory credits to begin Part 1 of the apprenticeship program at Niagara College while completing secondary school
Remember Coop is a great way to experience a future career. You can apply to take Coop for a morning or afternoon in Grade 11 or 12. For each Coop placement, you can earn 2 subject related credits at the Academic, Applied, Open, Workplace or Essential level. As well, you can gain valuable job skills. You may even be able to start an apprenticeship in a skilled trade or make future job contacts! For more information contact our Coop department and visit the Coop hallway to view the variety of placements.
