Welcome back to another exciting year at Virgil
School. We especially welcome all families new to
our community and our school. Our first abridged
newsletter highlights some important items of
information. For our unabridged version of our
newsletter, please contact the office.
I look forward to getting to know the parents
and students of the Virgil community as I begin my
first year as principal of Virgil School.
B. Pratt, Principal
Attendance/Call-In System.
If your son/daughter is ill or will be away from
school for any reason, please call the school
office (905-468-7793) between 8:15 and 9:00 am., or
call after hours and leave a voice mail message.
Regular phoning by parents will inform us
immediately of the whereabouts of children not in
school. We will call the home, workplace and, ir
necessary, the emergency number of parents whose
children do not arrive at school and about whom we
have not received a telephone call.
Lunch Time Rules
Students who stay at school for lunch will eat
in their classroom from 11:40 until 12:00 pm. At
that time they will be dismissed to the school yard
until 12:35 pm. Students must remain on school
grounds unless there has been a specific written
request from a parent/guardian and the student has
presented this request to the office. A lunchtime
pass will be issued by the office. Students must
bring a note each day they wish to leave the school
grounds. A blanket note to cover the entire school
year will not be accepted.
Students who walk to an from school and who
normally go home for lunch do not require a
lunchtime pass. Students requesting a lunchtime
pass will leave the school grounds at 11:40 and
return by 12:35 pm. They are not to have lunch at
school, then leave the school grounds. Students in
grades 6, 7, and 8 only should be bringing notes to
leave the school yard at lunch time.
Student Organizers
This year we continued to order the new type of
student organizer for Virgil School. The stydent
organizer is a valuable tool which is designed to
help students keep track of assignments and
responsibilities, as well as goals they set so that
they may best organize their time to accomplish
these tasks. We are asking each student to pay
$5.00 for the organizer. The school is covering a
good portion of the cost. If a student needs a
second organizer because the first one has been
lost or is damaged, the cost is $8.00. All teachers
of grades 3 to 8 will be making use of the
organizer. Parental support is essential to the
success of the student un using the organizer. When
our students reach high school they will continue
to use the organizer and the high school staff
insist that the students keep them up to date.
Please help us help your child develop essential
skills necessary to be successful.
Information Verification Form
An "information verificcation form" will be
sent home with each student. Parents are asked to
read the form carefully, make any changes to the
form if needed, and return it to the school as soon
as possible.
Lunch Supervisor Needed
Virgil School is looking for a lunch supervisor
to work in our school from 11:40 am to 12:20 pm ech
school day. This is a paid position with our Board,
therefore a police check is a must for those
applying. If you are interested please contact the
office.
ALLERGY ALERT!!!
We have several students at Virgil School who have
life threatening food allergies. Therefore, we are
asking fro everyone's support in eliminating foods
containing nuts frm school. Please note the
following instructions:
1. The Reason the school has a schoo wide policy on
being nut free is because of the extreme severity
of some children's reaction to nuts (especially
peanuts), which can be life threatening within a
few minutes of contact with any nut or nut oil.
because there are shared areas in the school among
classes (i.e. comouters in the library, the gym,
playground equipment, etc.0, it would not be safe
for such children to be in these areas if there
were chuldren eating peanut butter sandwiches or
other nut products.
2. Please encourage all children to throughly wash
their hands with soap and brush teeth prior to
coming to school it they have eaten any nut
products for breakfast. This will ensure that there
are no complications on the bus ride to school.
3. Please be bareful of foods that may contain
nuts that are not quite as obvious as the peanut
butter sandwich. the list includes: Ritz mini
peanut butter crackers, a wide assortment of
chocolate bars and other chocolate treats, all
varieties of M&M's - even plain, trail mix with
nuts included, rice krispie squares with peanut
butter included, etc.
4. The best and safest policyt is NEVER share your
food or treats, even if you think it is safe. If a
chld with an anaphylactic reaction even puts one
bite of something in their mouth, their throat will
close in minutes. No one can ever know for sure if
a food is safe until it's in their mouth and it's
NOT worth the risk.
5. For those parents who have children who seem to
only eat peanut butter sandwiches, hopefully they
will be happy to fill up on them prior to and after
school hours. With a little imagination you can
come up with a lot of other options. Besides all of
the different sandwich options (pita, bagels,
tortillas, breads or crackers) try making some
other fun choices: cold pizza, tortilla wraps, pita
pockets, soups in a thermos, taco salad, etc.
