WESTLANE THREEPEATS MOCK TRIAL CHAMPIONSHIP
On Friday, May 23rd, the Westlane Mock Trial Team, affectionately
known as the Legal Eagles, successfully defended their title as DSBN
champions. The tournament, now in its fourth year, is open to all
District School Board of Niagara secondary schools. This year's case
concerned Ari Throxalon, a business person charged with importing
cocaine concealed in wine bottles while on a business trip from South
America. Verdicts are delivered in two parts: the verdict on the
criminal charges, and the team who advances on to the next round.
Teams can win or lose on the criminal verdicts while receiving a
different outcome on the criminal portion.
Each team is made up of four lawyers and two witnesses. Teams must
prepare both sides of the case and can compete as the Crown in one
match and the defense in the next round. The lawyers make opening
and closing arguments and perform direct- and cross-examinations
of witnesses. Students learn the case law, courtroom procedures (e.g.
entering exhibits, objecting). Teams presented their cases at the
Superior Court of Justice in St. Catharines before real lawyers acting
as judges for the tournament.
Team members not only learn the ins and outs of the legal process,
they also develop skills that transfer to other areas. Students master
public speaking, thinking on their feet, and teamwork.
At this tournament, Westlane faced off against Governor Simcoe in
round one, and received a by through round two and into the finals.
The championship match saw a faceoff between the Spartans and Port
High. The judging panels complimented all teams for taking the initiative
to explore the legal system. The Westlane witnesses were commended
for their credibility and skill in presenting plausible characters.
The Westlane lawyers were complimented on their knowledge of case
law, courtroom procedure, and their ability to create a seamless
case.
Westlane's team was made up of lawyers Valerie Du Ross, Jennifer
Lightfoot, Alexis Radojcic and Lia Spilka, witnesses Emily Bennett
and Merissa Michell, and team advisor Geoff Bassett. Coach Mrs. Bootsma,
Ms. Agar, and Mr. Sirianni and technical advisor Constable Chris
Stewart were all on hand to witness the victory. Congrats to all
team members and watch out for the Legal Eagles next year as they
prepare a bid for the provincial championships. |
