SKILLS CHALLENGES
DSBN Regional Competitions:
The 11th Annual DSBN Technological Skills Challenges - Be a Champion! will be running throughout the month of February 2009. Registration for the challenges will be officially open in December 2008.
Approximately 3800 students participated in the various levels of the 2008 DSBN Skills Challenges. For 2008 results, click on "Award Winners" on the left side menu. Photos can be viewed under "Explore Tech!"

Provincial Qualifying Competitions:
Secondary School winners from some DSBN Regional competitions are required to compete at a Qualifying Competition in order to advance to the OTSC.

Ontario Technological Skills Competition (OTSC):
The 20th Annual Ontario Technological Skills Competition will run from May 4 - 6, 2009 at RIM Park and Manulife Financial Sportsplex, Waterloo, Ontario.

"TECH TUESDAYS" SKILLS TRAINING SESSIONS
DSBN TECH TUESDAYS HAVE OFFICIALLY STARTED! "Tech Tuesdays" will provide both students and teachers with opportunities to participate in after-school skills training sessions in the various Technology sectors to develop and hone their skills in anticipation for this year's Skills Challenges.
This is a another very exciting year for the Skills Challenges, with this year's national-level Canadian Skills Competition will be held in Prince Edward Island.
Students who wish to register for a scheduled session should see their Technology Teacher.

"SKILLS WORK!® FOR WOMEN"
NETWORKING DINNERS
Have you ever thought about a career in the skilled trades and technologies? Would you like to meet inspiring women from your community who have found exciting and rewarding careers in a field they love?
The "Skills Work!® for Women" Networking Dinner is an eye-opening experience where female students network with female mentors who are currently working or training in skilled trades and technology careers.
Dates for upcoming dinners in the Niagara Region will be announced as they become available.

"SKILLS WORK!® WHAT'S OUT THERE"
IN-SCHOOL PRESENTATIONS
This presentation, available to both Secondary and Elementary level students, takes a broad approach by focusing on a variety of topics, including:
- career planning resources
- labour market trends and how they apply to career decisions
- an introduction to apprenticeship training
- the coveted "Employability Skills"
- real life success stories about skilled tradespeople
NOTE: In order for schools to receive an in-school presentation, your school must be affiliated.

CARDBOARD BOAT RACES
Teams of four students design and construct a cardboard boat and participate in speed and weight challenges. Students are given the materials to construct the boat and 2 hours of building time.
