The Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) is a real-world opportunity for students to get a head start on their postsecondary education through an apprenticeship. Not just anyone can pursue a skilled trade; it takes interest, aptitude, commitment and pride in one's work to expect a good career with a great future.
OYAP is an intensive and a rewarding choice for bright, eager teens who wish to jump-start their careers. The current shortages in the skilled trades which have been articulated by business, industry and labour, present a prime opportunity for students who will be graduating and starting their careers in the near future!
The Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) student will have the added opportunity to sign for their apprenticeship during the program. For the student who is serious about pursuing a postsecondary education through apprenticeship, signing up for OYAP gives them an head-start by allowing them to apply all off their hours and skills toward their postsecondary apprenticeship education.
To succeed as an apprentice, a continued commitment to both school and workplace is essential. Your students will be expected to...
have regular and punctual attendance
show respect for their employer and be willing to accept their guidance and training
stay on top of their daily paperwork
be focused on learning the required skills
Students who are at least 16 years of age and have completed the credit requirements for Grade 10 (or equivalent) will qualify for the program.
The first step... your student should contact their Co-op, Technology or Guidance teacher for information about getting a head start with apprenticeship education through OYAP.
