Directions to Teachers
All programs offered at the centre relate to The Ontario Curriculum, Grades 1-8 and The Kindergarten Program. Choose activities which will best support the curriculum topic being studied in your classroom.
All programs here are approximately 2 hours long. Please check program notes and off-site information carefully before making your selection. Please plan for a full-day visit (about 4 hours), and choose 2 programs for students to participate. Two classes from a school visiting a centre in the same time slot must enter their information at the same time.
Please ask students to dress appropriately for their visit to the Outdoor Studies Centre - i.e., clothing suitable to the weather conditions, proper footwear for hiking (no sandals, open-toe shoes, or platform heels).
Parent helpers may assist with supervision of the students. A minimum of 3-5 adults per class is suggested.
Indoor Activities
It is our intention to provide all students who come to the St. Johns Outdoor Studies Centre with enjoyable and rewarding learning experiences in the outdoors; however, in cases of extreme weather conditions, it may be necessary to take the students indoors. The indoor programs will be offered inside the Centre and in the portable classroom. Programs have been designed to reinforce areas of The Ontario Curriculum and will support the units being studied in your classroom.
Indoor programs, prepared by St. Johns staff, include the following:
- programs offered by staff (e.g., making owl calls);
- a variety of fiction and non-fiction books;
- a variety of animal and bird puppets.
