You must be registered in a provincially funded school in order to enrol in an eLearning course.
The District School Board of Niagara now makes certain courses available “online” through the eLearning interface Desire2Learn. All such courses are noted in the course calendar by including a high-lighted statement, at the end of the course description, indicating that the course may be available on-line to a student as an eLearning course.
An “eLearning” course can only be selected by a student after consultation with a Guidance Counselor to ensure that the student has the necessary program pre-requisites and has the potential to meet the needs identified below. The student, with the help of school staff, must also have access to the computer hardware and software necessary to access the course material.
Teachers in the DSBN are learning how to use eLearning to augment or supplement their face to face classroom with activities on-line. These are often created by the classroom teacher and are then available 24 hours - 7 days a week from home or from school. Such learning opens many new opportunities for teachers and students to extend the walls of the classroom.
Courses offered in the traditional, face-to-face classroom setting should continue to be selected by students as their first choice, before considering an eLearning approach. The traditional classroom setting should still be considered as the preferred learning environment.
