In September 2006, A. N. Myer welcomed a new group of students to its community: students with special needs. The Special Needs Program consists of two classes: seventeen students, two classroom teachers and five educational assistants. Mr. Vescio, Mrs. Klassen and the entire Myer staff have made the transition so smooth and enjoyable! Though the year is young, we have participated in a few wonderful events: an Exotic Animal Show, the Pep Rally, the Community Clean-Up, the Special Needs Activity program at Brock University, as well as a Hallowe’en Dance at Stamford Collegiate with old and new friends. The proximity to community resources has provided opportunities for developing skills in shopping, using the public library, and travelling on the Niagara Transit system (which we used to get to the social at Stamford on Hallowe’en). In addition, the students are already involved in a few jobs around the school: picking up the school attendance sheets, cleaning up the cafeteria, and completing clerical jobs for staff. The students particularly enjoy Physical Education class with Mr. DiMartino - especially the warm-ups! The exciting news is that we will be in our new classrooms by mid-November! The renovations include a new kitchen area and sensory room, as well as an accessible, fully-equipped washroom. We are looking forward to being on the first floor - in the middle of all the Myer action! We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone in the A. N. Myer community for making us feel so welcome - we are proud to wear purple and white! Go, Marauders, Go Winter music show on Thursday, December 14, 2006 A. N. Myer will be holding their annual Winter show. This year’s theme is Celtic. The music department’s concert band will be playing Celtic carols and the Irish dance club will be performing dances.
Do You Discard Your Zehrs Grocery Tapes and Campbell’s Soup Labels?
Please Stop!! We would be more than happy to take them off your hands!!! This is a fabulous and easy fundraising activity in our Special Needs classes. The best part is, it requires virtually no work on your part. Just save your tapes and labels and send them to the school, bring them in to Room 109 or drop them off in the office and ask that they be given to one of the Special Needs teachers. Our Special Needs classes collect these items and turn them into $Cash$ to help fund our Life Skills Programs. Thank you!
On Sunday, November 5, 2006 A. N. Myer Secondary School hosted their 14th annual Craft Show. The event was held in the cafeteria and the gym. The show was the music department’s only fundraiser for the year. The theme was Christmas and there was something for everyone! There were over 60 crafters, including students from Myer’s Art department. They sold many different crafts including cards and stickers. Some of the students who were present at the event painted peoples’ faces. Myer’s music department played Christmas carols throughout the day. The concert band was split into shifts, performing in both the gym and the cafeteria. Besides carols and art, the craft show contained many other services and events. There was a babysitting station, kitchen and bake table. From setting up Saturday night, to taking everything down Sunday evening, all of Myer’s students did a great job!

Myer Students Travel to the
Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre

On Tuesday November 28th students in Mrs. Harper’s Grade 10 Japanese language classes experienced a day of Japanese culture in Toronto at the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre. Our hosts treated us to two workshops where students took part in a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony and learned to make origami. The centre offers numerous programs and sessions on various aspects of Japanese culture and aesthetic pursuits in addition to housing the Japan Information Centre where people may browse or borrow items to learn about Japan. Lunch nearby at Memories of Japan was an especially favourite part of the day as was depleting the vending machine of Pocky. We ate a traditional Japanese O-Bento lunch that was as pleasing to the eye as it was to the palate. It arrived in a lacquer box and included miso soup, sushi appetizer, salad, tofu, vegetables and a choice of tempura, teriyaki chicken, beef or salmon, followed by the all time favourite- green tea ice cream.
