MYER’S SPIRIT CARRIES ON

The Marauder Spirit has been at an all time high this year and student council is loving it! This September we welcomed our incoming grade nine’s with a BBQ, held a week full of spirit activities at lunch and ended the week with a Welcome Back BBQ for all grades to enjoy. October brought a chill to the air, but council provided the sunshine by celebrating World Teacher’s Day, holding a Coffee House and ending the month off full of tricks and treats! Halloween spirit week provided a pumpkin carving contest for all period one classes to enjoy, a costume contest and ghoulish lunch time activities.

Is council tired yet? Not even close; we have many events planned for the last two months of 2006!

BRICK BY BRICK   Hair Raising Event

This year Student Council is also spearheading an initiative called “Brick by Brick.” In 1995 Craig Kielburger established a foundation called Free The Children. Brick by Brick is one of the many organizations within this foundation. The goal is to build a school house for children in indigenous communities. Myer’s goal is to make this a reality for children in Kenya. All of our fundraising efforts this year will go towards achieving this goal.

Some fundraising events we have already held include the selling of Student Price Cards, our Coffee House and our support for the Casino Niagara Marathon.

We will continue to raise funds for Brick by Brick, step by step for the remainder of the school year. Our November and December events are just the tip of the iceburg! We are also planning a Fashion Show with African flare, a Vow of Silence Day, a Brick purchasing campaign and a Walk-a-Thon. All of these events will require support from our students, staff, administration and YOU! Imagine, Myer can be instrumental in building a school for children who live in the depths of poverty. We can help promote peace and tolerance, empower young girls through education, help stop the spread of AIDS and provide a foundation upon which every child can thrive! This is an amazing opportunity for our Myer community to bond together in support of a WE generation rather than a ME generation!
Student Council will be holding a Christmas assembly this year and it will prove to be one hair raising event! One of our fellow students, Christian Brownlee, has grown his hair for the past 6 years and he is now willing to give it up! Christian will donate his locks to "Locks of Love," to make wigs for cancer patients, and Myer students will be asked to donate their money to see how much Christian will cut! The more we raise the more we cut! Half of the proceeds will benefit Cancer research and the other half will support our Brick by Brick campaign. So, start looking under those cushions and gather your pennies, we may also have a special Teacher cutting ceremony if Myer can meet the challenge!

Brick By Brick Leadership Workshop

Some of our students participated in a workshop to help lead the school towards achieving our goal of building a school in Kenya. It was truly inspirational, motivational and exhilarating. We are all pumped and ready to go - this will be the year: change, support and human kindness.
