Parents as learning partners . . .

Learning is not something that happens only at school. Parental support, interest and encouragement are vital to a student's success at school. Here are some ways to help:

- Communicate regularly with teachers to discuss your child's progress

- Share information about your child's physical and emotional health with the teacher

- Visit your child's school to see student-centred learning in action

- Discuss school related topics with your child. Listen to what they have to say.

- Encourage your child to discover and pursue personal interests.

- Remain receptive to your child's ideas. Help your child think through their ideas on various topics.

- Ensure that books, magazines, newspapers and writing materials are available at home.

- Provide a quiet time and a place for reading and study. Read to your child, or establish a family time for reading.

- Nurture the attitude that learning is a life-long adventure.

- Help your children experience television and other electronic media as a valuable source of appropriate entertainment and information
