PRINCIPAL'S CORNER:
This year, Prince Philip Public School will focus on a character trait every month. The theme for November is Responsibility. Just as with many other essential skills in life, parents must explicitly teach their children how to be responsible. Being responsible is an attitude, as well as a skill, and must be taught slowly and age-appropriately. We empower our children to be successful in life by teaching them that everyone has rights and privileges, but with rights and privileges, come responsibilities. A child will not automatically pick up his/her toys unless the expectation is there. To have the privilege of playing with toys, a child has the responsibility to put them away. To be successful at school and later in a career, children must learn early that they must be responsible for their own work and behaviour. Being responsible for completing school assignments on time and to the best of their ability, allows children to prioritize and organize efficiently.
Making mistakes on assignments, and having the opportunity to fix them, promotes a feeling of being in control of their outcomes. Being responsible for poor behavioural choices allows children to see that there are good consequences for good choices and consequences they will not like for poor choices.
Allowing children to be responsible for their choices builds their self-esteem. As difficult as it is sometimes for we as parents to allow children to experience the result of poor choices in academic or behavioural areas, in the long run, we teach our children that responsibility leads to success in life.
