St. Davids Spelling Club

As an extension of your child’s regular literacy program, students are invited to participate in a Spelling Bee hosted by Spelling Bee of Canada, Niagara Regional Chapter. This program will help to develop your child’s vocabulary, learn new word definitions, be able to research and learn sentence structure, improve their reading comprehension and public speaking skills. Participation is voluntary and extracurricular. Students who join, need to be committed and to be able to study independently on a regular basis. In addition, during school coaching will be made available for students.

Volunteer coaches will help students practice to prepare for their competition and hold mini-spelling bees. Participants will compete in a school/family of schools and/or Regional Spelling Bee in April. Successful Regional competitors, from each age category, will advance to the Provincial Championship Final, which will be held in Toronto and will be televised.

The Spelling Bee program has three age-related categories – Primary (ages 6 – 8), Junior (ages 9 to 11) and Intermediate (ages 12 – 14). Your child will be placed in one of the three categories based on his or her age as of December 31, 2007.
