Aboriginal Education

The Aboriginal community is one of the fastest growing sectors of the population in Ontario. The District School Board of Niagara is dedicated to supporting and improving Aboriginal student success. Our intention is to promote and enhance Aboriginal cultural awareness in each of our schools. The District School Board of Niagara is committed to this initiative and encourages parental involvement.

Aboriginal Education Advisory Committee (AEAC)

The board has established this committee to provide ongoing advice on matters relating to the education of Aboriginal students.

In October 2008 the District School Board of Niagara held its first Aboriginal Awareness symposium. The ‘spirit tree’ was created as a symbol representing all Aboriginal groups, the Metis, the Inuit and all First Nations. The Spirit tree was created by Rhonda Maracle-Gerritsen, a teacher for Native Studies at the DSBN.
