Opinion Piece: Should junk food be banned from schools? Level 3
Junk food should be banned for Ontario secondary schools. Junk food is unhealthy, a waste of money and creates more debris on the ground for custodians, and the environment. Junk food is not an alternative to a healthy meal.
The reason that junk food should be banned is that it is unhealthy to students and will spoil your appetite. The ingredients in junk food can cause health concerns if you eat a lot of it. Almost everyone eats junk food for lunch instead of a nutritional meal. For example, in the documentary Super Size Me, when the main character goes to a school and asks the kids what they are having for lunch, most of them eat junk food. A nutritional lunch is a basic meal to have during the day to keep you going.
Many adolescents spend a lot of money each week on junk food. They are wasting the money their parents gave them on something not benefiting just hurting you in the long run. Packing a lunch of stuff that will pay off in the long run and save your money for something that you need to have or a rainy day.
Some people when they open something or finish it do not use their common sense and place it in a garbage bin or a trash can. Many people just are lazy and throw the wrappers of junk food on the ground thinking it’s okay, Well what they don’t know is that custodians have to clean up after them and it’s not as pleasant as it seems. Also the environment is being affected when people just throw junk food wrappers in parks or on school playgrounds creating more problems.
Junk food is not necessarily that bad and it is okay to have once in a while but not all the time. If people didn’t litter
and waste tons of money on it, the world could be a better place.
