Before you Begin --

  1. Read the intro for each Tutorial Page (Page 1 doesn't have a video)

  2. Move from Tutorial Page to Page at the top right of the screen

  3. Click on "Learn More" below the picture before starting the video for extra info.

  4. Once you start playing a video, turn Captions on if you want to read the script as you watch (bottom left of video screen)

  5. Watch the video without the pressure of completing these notes, then watch again to complete notes.


Tutorial Page 1--No video, read intro.

When you make a movie, you tell a story. That story is made up of scenes, which are made up of video clips. With iMovie, you can easily arrange your clips in the order that best tells your story. To change the story, you can simply cut out parts you don’t like, rearrange the order of your clips, or both. It’s that easy.

Tutorial Page 2:  Moving Video from the Camera to Your Mac

Import video from your video camera to iMovie HD

  1. If the Mac is logged in be sure it's your class's login.  If not sure, logout and back in again.

  2. Use a __________________ to connect your video camera to the FireWire port on your Mac, then _______________________________

  3. Load iMovie > ______________________________ (if a project loads with program, do File Menu > Create New Project) > Give it a filename and have it Save to the Desktop < Create.  Let your teacher know your filename.

  4. Switch to _____________ Mode by clicking on the button that looks like this ________________.

Page 3:  Arranging Your Clips

  1. Drag each clip to use in your movie from the Clips Pane into the ____________________________  at the bottom.

  2. _____________________ in the Clip Viewer to change their order. 

  3. To select and move multiple clips just hold down the ______________________________  while selecting the clips you want to move (click on  "Learn More -- Tips" to find answer)

  4. If you decide you don't want to use a clip, ___________________________________

Page 4:  Keeping Only the Parts You Want

  1. Click the _____________________________________ in the iMovie window.

  2. This method is not shown in tutorial -- Select a clip from the timeline > slide Playhead to the spot you want > Edit Menu > Split Video at Playhead > drag the part you don't want into the Clip Pane for now (don't delete unless 100% sure--edit > cut).

  3. Method shown in tutorial -- Select a clip from the Timeline > Move your pointer near the end of the clip and notice the __________________________________________, called the "Trim Pointer".  This means you can _____ your clip.

  4. Drag your pointer toward the center of the clip and notice that the duration of your ____________________ as you move further to the left. You can see the new ending point in the Clip Viewer. This "rolls up" your footage to hide it underneath your clip.  It is __________________, it's just __________________________________.

Page 5:  Creating a Title for Your Movie

  3. Use the options to change the _______, _______, and ______ of the title text.

  4. You can adjust how fast titles appear and how long they stay onscreen by using the ____________________________ in the Titles Pane. Remember to leave your titles onscreen ________________________________________. (click on  "Learn More" & read " Tips" to find answer)

  5. Click the _____________________ to see what the title will look like in your movie.

  6. If you want the title to be a separate clip, rather than having the title appear over your first clip, _______________________________________

  7. Some televisions reduce the amount of viewing area for your movie. To prevent titles from being cut off when the movie is displayed on a television, select the ___________________________ in the Titles pane.   8. Titles are useful for more ______________________________________________. You can use a title to ___________________________________, for example.  Consider titles such as “Meanwhile back at home” or “Two weeks later.” You can even use titles to list the names of the people in your movie, which you’ll find helpful when you watch your movie years later.   9. When the title clip is done (not before), drag the title itself from the list to the left of the first clip in the clip viewer. Notice the small red line appear below the clip. It appears while the title is being added to the clip. You cannot ___________________________ once you've dragged it to the clip viewer. To make a change you'd have to _________________________________

  10. After the red line disappears you can click Rewind to move to the beginning of your movie, then click the Play to watch the movie.

  11. Save your iMovie project.

Page 6:  Using Digital Pictures in Your Movie

  1. Make sure that you have pictures stored in iPhoto. They can be digital or scanned photos.

  2. In iMovie, click the ____________________. Your digital pictures appear in the ______________

  3. Use the arrows to scroll through all the pictures in your library > Select the pictures you want to add.

  4. You can add motion to a picture; this is called the Ken Burns Effect.  If you want the picture to have _________, select Ken Burns Effect (beside Preview window). To turn motion off, deselect it.

  5. To zoom in to your picture, drag the Zoom slider that looks like this ________________.  To set __________________________________________________________ drag the Duration Slider that looks like this --____________________ Where are both of these found?  ______________________________.

  6. To turn a frame of a video clip into a ____________________- to use in your movie, move the ________________  to the image in the clip > _________ Menu > _______________________. Your new still clip appears in the _______________ Drag it to where you want it in the _______________________.

  7. Drag each photo to the clip viewer. The small red progress indicator appears as iMovie adds the picture. After the red line disappears, you can Rewind then click Play to watch the movie.

  8. Save your iMovie project.

Page 7:  Adding Transitions Between Clips

  1. How your movie transitions between clips helps determine its flow. For example, upbeat, fast-paced music videos tend to have ________________ between clips. By contrast, videos for slow, dramatic songs tend to use transitions that ____________________________ one clip into the next. (from Intro text at start of Page)

  2. A transition is __________________________

  3. Select a clip in the clip viewer. Make sure the clip is followed by at least one other clip.

  4. Click the ___________________, and then select a transition from the list. Notice a preview of the transition appear at the top of the Transitions pane.

  5. Drag the transition from _______________ to _______________________. A ____________________r appears to show where it has been added.  A transition marker looks like this -- _____________. 

  6. A small red line appears below the transition marker while the transition is being added between the two clips.

  7. After the red line disappears, you can click the Rewind button to move the playhead to the beginning of your movie, and then click the Play button to watch your movie.

  8. Repeat the process to add several more transitions to your movie.

  9. Can transitions be changed after you’ve put them in your movie?  ____________ (Thinking back--can title clips be changed after you've put them in your movie?   ____________)   To change a transition, just select the transition icon in the ____________ then change the ____________ or __________________ in the upper right corner of the Transitions window > click on _______________

Click on  "Learn More" then scroll down and check "Tips" on the left to find this information:

  1. Transitions shorten your movie:
    Adding a transition between two clips _____________________________. For example, if you add a two-second cross-dissolve, your movie will be _________________by two seconds. Make sure you ____________________ before ____________________ so it matches the length of your movie.

  2. Fade in and out to black:
    There may be times in your movie when you want to show that you’ve switched to a different location or time of day. A technique commonly used to achieve this goal is to ____________________________. Use the ________________ to adjust the length of the fade, and then drag the ___________________transition to _____________ of the clip in the clip viewer (or the ___________________ transition to the ___________of the clip).

  3. Use transitions to make your subject magically appear:

Page 8:  Adding Video Effects

  1. In the clip viewer, ___________________ to apply an effect to.

  2. Click the ____________________. Notice the list of available effects.

  3. Click an effect to select it. Notice a preview of the effect appear at the top of the Effects pane.

  4. Click the _________________ button to add the effect to the clip. A small red progress indicator appears as the effect is added to the clip then an Effect Icon appears at the top of you clip in the Clip Viewer.  Draw a clip showing the Effect Icon--

Click on  "Learn More" then scroll down and check "Tips" on the left to find this information:

  1. Apply an effect to part of a clip
    There may be times when you want to apply an effect to ________________________. For example, in a movie about your dog, you might want to use the earthquake effect only when your dog walks across the floor. Use the _______________________, below the Timeline in the _______________ area, to select part of the clip. Then ________________________ you want to add, and click the ______________ button. The effect will be added to the ________________________ of the clip.

  2. Apply multiple effects to one clip
    With iMovie, you can apply multiple effects to one clip. For example, you can give your movie an older look by applying both the Sepia Tone and Aged Film effects. Select a clip that already has an effect and apply another effect. The additional effects are _________________ only _____________________ or empty the iMovie Trash.

  3. Apply one effect to multiple clips
    There may be times when you want to apply one effect to multiple clips, such as changing a series of clips to black and white. To do this, select _________________ in the series. Then hold down the _________________________ and select every other clip in the series. Then click ______________ to apply the same effect to all the selected clips.

  4. Look for effect-specific options
    Some effects have ________________________ you can adjust. If available, these options appear ________________________. For example, with the Aged Film effect, you can adjust the amount of jitters and scratches that appear onscreen.   5. Don’t overdo it with effects
    Although effects can be a lot of fun, they can easily __________________________ from the subject of your movie. When adding effects to your movie, think about the _________________________ and whether applying it _________________ or _________________from the story you’re trying to tell.

Adding Audio
This information is not in the Tutorials but you'll need it:

  1. To add a song from your CD or MP3 Player -- Open iTunes > be sure you're in the iTunes Library > Put in your CD/MP3 player > Open the CD/MP3 drive window > drag your song from the CD/MP3 window to the iTunes Library window.

  2. To add the song to your movie -- Open iMovie > Turn on Timeline View (Button at left).  Timeline view shows one Video Channel and 2 Audio Channels below it.

  3. Click the Audio button below the Clip Shelf window.

  4. ITunes Library songs will be displayed > select one and click on Play to hear it. Pick one and drag it to the 1st Audio Channel on your Timeline (there are 2 audio channels under your video channel in the Timeline)

  5. To edit the Audio Track -- click on the song in the Timeline > drag the Playhead to the spot where your video finishes > edit menu > Split Audio Clip at Playhead (if it says Split "Video" Clip you haven't selected the song > Select the section of the song to delete (click off it then back on it to be sure you've selected the right stuff) > Edit menu > Cut

  6. If you want sound effects in your movie--on the selection bar at top, select Sound Effects > drag the one you want onto the 2nd Audio Channel on your Timeline > Follow above instructions to cut it.

  7. You can also record a voice over by clicking the Record Voice button and speaking into the mike (stop left corner of computer).  Click the Stop button to stop recording. You can drag the voice recording, the orange block below, or other sounds to the appropriate place in the movie.

Page 9:  Saving Your Movie Back to Video Tape

This video shows you how to save your finished project back on your video camera.  This isn't used often.  Watch it if you like, watch it later, or don't watch it all.

Page 10:  Sending Your Movie to iDVD

  1. When you've finished editing your movie, save the project in iMovie.

  2. Click iDVD Button (to the right.  Here you can add __________________ to your movie to create scenes

  3. Move the ________________to the spot where you want _______________________ > click ____________________ button. Repeat. Give the Chapters names.   Save when done.

  4. When you're ready to send your project to DVD be sure to ___________________ first, then click on ___________________________________ button to send your movie to____________________.
    Click on  "Learn More" then scroll down and check "Step by Step and "Tips" to find this information:

  5. After iDVD opens, notice your movie appears in the iDVD window.

  6. When you have an iDVD project already open, you can easily add ________________________. In iDVD, go to the ______________ menu > _________________ > _________________> Browse for the ______________ you want to add > click _____________.

  7. Click the _________________ to reveal the Customize Pane, and make sure the _________________ is selected.

  8. Choose a theme (it adds an intro to your movie) and notice a preview of the theme appears in the iDVD window.

  9. Click the Preview button to see how your DVD will look.

  10. Insert a _________________ into your Mac > click the _____________button > burning will take a while because iDVD needs to render (prepare) the movie before it burns it.

Complete the survey to give the tutorial creators feedback.  Be positive but also perhaps mention that it would be good to have a tutorial on adding Music and Sound Effects to your video, and one on using iDVD.
