What is FIRST Robotics?
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) was founded in 1989 by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire today's youth to become involved in the Science and Technology fields. Based in Manchester, New Hampshire, FIRST designs creative and innovative programs in order to motivate young people pursue an education and the career opportunities offered in these fields.
Emphasizing the concept of 'Gracious Professionalism,' FIRST encourages high-quality work along with the values of others while respecting individuals and the community. Gracious Professionalism allows for intense competition and collective gains. Both students and mentors involved in this program learn how to give it their all on the field, while treating everyone equally with the respect they deserve. There are no losers when it comes to FIRST, because every individual involved gains something through their experience, whether it be in the form of various knowledge, skill sets, or long-lasting friendships.
Founder Dean Kamen's vision is to help the youth of today discover the excitement and rewards available in the Science and Technology fields. Ask anyone involved, they'll confirm that they gained something worthwhile through this competition.
